Job Summary: The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist supports the university’s environmental health and safety objectives by conducting ergonomic evaluations, coordinating medical surveillance, performing industrial hygiene assessments, handling injury reporting and root cause analysis, and facilitating safety training. Operating with independence and sound judgment, the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist ensures compliance with applicable regulations and policies while fostering a safe and healthy work environment for the campus community.
Duties and responsibilities Ergonomic Evaluations - Assist the Director in administering and coordinating the campus ergonomic program by applying program knowledge to implement initiatives that promote employee well-being and prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
- Using department system applications, assigns ergonomic pre-assessments to campus employees and monitors for completion. Analyzes completed assessment risk scores to determine actionable next steps and performs follow-up assessments with employees in-person, as required. Interprets data to make recommendations and exercises sound judgment to identify areas of potential injury reduction strategies and presents findings to the Campus-Wide Health and Safety Committee.
- Track and monitor the centralized procurement and inventory of ergonomic equipment through the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department, ensuring proper allocation, timely deployment, and enhanced control over purchases. Monitor and resolve open action items related to ergonomic recommendations, ensuring prompt follow-through and closure.
- Document and maintain accurate records for ergonomic evaluations and equipment distribution.
- Maintains a strong working knowledge of ergonomic requirements and interprets the impact of workstation alignment to reduce risk factors that may contribute to work-related injuries.
Medical Surveillance - Assist the Director in administering and monitoring the medical surveillance program by planning, coordinating, and organizing numerous and diverse demands. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, scheduling of medical services such as physical exams, vaccinations, and other necessary evaluations for employees.
- Uses thorough working knowledge of regulatory requirements to identify and communicate medical surveillance requirements to covered employees and make interpretations of results to track regulatory compliance and identify potential deficiencies. Serves in an accountability role for ensuring that medical surveillance is completed within the allotted time-frame from a regulatory perspective.
- Collaborate with departmental leadership to develop and implement new medical surveillance programs by applying ingenuity and strategic planning to achieve programmatic goals as the scope of the university’s needs expand.
- Track employee attendance and compliance in the medical surveillance program by maintaining accurate records that ensure compliance with regulatory and university policy requirements, while supporting auditing and reporting purposes and maintaining confidentiality and accessibility as appropriate.
Industrial Hygiene - Apply working knowledge of program policies and procedure to serve as the university’s subject matter expert for occupational health and safety programs related to employee exposures.
- Respond to campus health and safety concerns related to occupational exposures by conducting hazard assessments, analyzing potential risks, and providing technical expertise on exposure monitoring to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
- Implement industrial hygiene measures to evaluate, control, and mitigate potential occupational hazards such as chemical, physical, and biological exposures.
- Prepare detailed reports and provide recommendations based on findings from health and safety investigations to inform decision-making.
Injury Reporting and Root Cause Analysis - Spearhead the injury reduction framework by analyzing employee injuries and illnesses to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure supervisory investigation reports are completed for all incidents by reviewing for quality, thoroughness, and compliance to meet standards.
- Host bi-weekly calls with affected supervisors to review lessons learned, share best practices, and support injury reduction efforts.
- Conduct formal root cause analyses for significant incidents by meeting with supervisors and employees to identify contributing factors and establish corrective actions that prevent recurrence and improve workplace safety.
- Prepare and present summary reports on injury metrics, trends, and program effectiveness to the Director and other campus stakeholders. Demonstrates skill in research, development, and evaluation of policies including the collection and interpretation of injury data to create and recommend conclusions that may support injury reduction strategies.
Training Development and Implementation - Under the general direction of the Director, the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist will create, implement, and facilitate safety training programs in alignment with the core areas of responsibility in which they serve as a subject matter expert. The Specialist must be able to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved and where general recommendations may be needed to develop core program areas.
- Conduct regular training sessions for employees, supervisors, and campus stakeholders to enhance awareness and compliance with health and safety policies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through feedback, assessments, and data analysis, updating materials as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure training meets campus-wide needs and supports the university’s health and safety objectives.
Miscellaneous • Performs other classification related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelors’ degree and/or the equivalent training
- Administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs PLUS two years of related experience.
Required Qualifications: - Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations.

- Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.
Preferred Qualifications: - Certification or eligibility for certification (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist)
- Experience within the California State University (CSU) system.
Special Conditions: - Ability to wear a respirator for hazardous materials handling and emergency response situations.
- Ability to complete the 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within the first year and maintain it annually thereafter.
- Must maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Anticipation Salary Range: $4,598.00 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,598 - 8,318 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
