Why you’ll love this position:This is a highly technical and managerial position in the Chemistry Laboratory at the Missouri State Public Health Laboratory (MSPHL). The Chemistry Laboratory conducts routine and emergency chemical analyses in environmental and clinical samples.
- Direct and assist in the overall planning, development, coordination, and administration of laboratory services in the chemistry laboratory, including the identification of program priorities and client needs.
- Technical Manager of methodology that is conducted by the MSPHL Chemistry Laboratory in compliance with any accrediting authority, i.e. CLIA, AIHA, EPA, FDA, NRC, and CDC.
- Provide general supervisory duties of the chemistry laboratory staff and oversee the coordination of work schedules for chemistry laboratory staff.
- Assist in the technical operations of the chemistry laboratory, including development, validation, training, and maintenance of chemistry methodology and instrumentation.
- Oversee the development and management of the chemistry laboratory budget by monitoring expenditures according to budget allocations/appropriations, and recommend and/or initiate cost saving measures.
- Represent and/or serve as a liaison for the chemistry laboratory; maintain contact, cooperate with, and address local, state, and federal entities and other chemistry laboratory stakeholders.
- Oversee the administration of contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements with local, state, and federal entities.
- Perform the technical aspects of coordinating chemical terrorism laboratory preparedness.
- Technical duties of this position require a working technical knowledge of the operation and maintenance of instruments utilized in the chemistry laboratory, including; atomic absorption and gamma spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, high pressure liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. Duties will also include conducting routine and emergency chemical analysis utilizing techniques in the listed instrumentation.
- Work with the executive management team to provide expertise and feedback on laboratory wide projects to move the laboratory forward.
Minimum Qualifications: - A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Biology, Medical Laboratory Technology, natural sciences, or a closely related field; and four or more years of professional experience as a Chemist, Microbiologist, Medical Technologist, Veterinarian, Forensic Scientist, or a closely related area.
- 4 years of experience in a high complexity laboratory preferably in Chemistry. (Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas or in Public Health or Public Administration may substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the required experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year of experience.)
