    Job Summary

    Performs unskilled manual labor duties of a routine nature.

    Works under close supervision, performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instructions are frequently provided and work is regularly reviewed.

    Representative Duties

    Duties may vary depending upon division and assignment.

    Performs routine custodial and maintenance tasks at various City locations.

    Sweeps and picks up litter from beach area, walkways, streets, alleys, sidewalks, City owned parking lots and other public use areas.

    Empties and relines trash cans. Operates a small truck or utility vehicle to haul and dispose of trash in trash bins.

    Responds to inquiries from the public and City departments.

    Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Performs other duties, as required.

    Requirements

    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

    Knowledge of:
    Safe lifting techniques
    Safe work practices and procedures
    Effective customer service techniques

    Ability to:
    Perform continuous grounds maintenance duties in large crowds
    Perform continuous physical labor, including bending and lifting
    Follow oral instructions
    Operate power tools
    Read and understand signs and follow directions
    Provide effective customer service
    Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees and the public
    Work with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds as well as a variety of work styles, personalities, and approaches

    Skill in:
    Dealing with the public in a courteous manner.

    Education, Training and Experience:

    Completion of sufficient education and/or training to read, write and communicate in English at a level reasonable for successful job performance, as assigned.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a valid Class C driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work is regularly performed outside in seasonal climate and weather conditions. Requires regular exposure to dust, odors, cleaning chemicals, slippery surfaces and unsanitary conditions. May be required to work evening shift and/or weekends. Must be able to work among large crowds of people. Physical demands include continuous arm movements, standing, bending, heavy lifting, carrying, climbing stairs, and reaching.

    This is a temporary hourly position without benefits. The City of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as-needed (temporary) employees who are not eligible for coverage under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The City and as-needed employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the deferred compensation plan. As-needed employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis.
