    COUNSELOR ForCamp Chance at Walker Creek Ranch

    CAMP CHANCE: (June 23 - June 27, 2025)

    Camp Chance is a joint effort of the San Rafael Police Department, Marin County Sheriff's Department and Marin County Office of Education designed to provide a positive outdoor experience for at-risk and low-income youth of San Rafael and unincorporated Marin County. Children are between the ages of 11 - 13. The program seeks to create and foster rapport between children and peace officers in a personal and relaxed setting as well as teach, mentor, and role model healthy minds, healthy emotions, and healthy bodies. Walker Creek naturalists and Camp Chance counselors (18 and over) will also provide assistance with Camp Chance.

    COMPENSATION:
    • Salary is $23.22 - $25.60 per hour (depending on experience/qualifications).
    • Room and board will be provided, and counselors will have many opportunities to expand their leadership skills.


    DATES OF EMPLOYMENT :
    • Training day is June 14,2025
    • Camp Chance is from June 23- June 27, 2025.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Provide supervision for 8 - 12 campers, ages 11 - 13, at a residential camp that brings first-responders (police, fire search and rescue) together with children. Assist naturalists during lessons, recreational activities, waterfront activities, evening programs and a beach field trip. Provide guidance and leadership to ensure safety and overall well-being of campers. Provide direction to counselors-in-training (CIT's) who function as support staff for the program. Assist with meal supervision, set-ups, and clean-ups.

    DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age by May 1, 2025 and have graduated from high school by June 15, 2025.
    • Experience working with children and enjoy being outside.
    • Recreational leadership skills such as canoeing and fishing; music, and theatrical and/or artistic abilities are also desirable.
    • Conversational Spanish skills are desirable.

    THE LOCATION:

    Walker Creek Ranch is located amongst the rolling hills of beautiful Marin County in a partially wooded valley created by a meandering creek. The site is approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco and 18 miles west of historical downtown Petaluma. Our "outdoor classroom" includes bay woodlands, grasslands, coastal scrub chaparral, streams, a four-acre swimming pond, a low elements challenge course, an observatory and 20 miles of hiking trails. Limantour Beach is a short distance away and may be visited.

    THE WEATHER:

    The weather at Walker Creek Ranch can be variable. During the evening, coastal fog is typical and generally burns by off mid-morning the following day. Afternoons are warm with cooling coastal breezes. Packing lists will be provided to selected applicants.

    In accordance with thesalary resolution, this position receives no benefits with the exception of a retirement plan and paid sick leave.

    As a temporary employee, you may not work more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
    • You are entitled to receive sick leave in accordance with California's Paid Sick Leave Law (AB 1522).
    • Participation in a retirement plan is mandated by Federal Law and you will be enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS):
      • Employee contributes 3.75% of salary
      • City of San Rafael contributes 3.75% of salary
