    Family Camp at Yosemite is located in the Sierras, about 10 miles west of Yosemite National Park. Family Camp is a summer recreational facility run by the City of San Jose. The camp serves 250-300 campers per day. The program is geared for families by providing lodging, meal service, recreation activities and retail operations.

    This part time Maintenance Assistant opportunity is with the Destination, Events and Sports Unit (DES) in the Park Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services.

    NOTE: This position requires the part-time Maintenance Assistant to report onsite to the Family Camp Yosemite facility in Groveland, California. On-site living facilities are available during the peak season. May-October 1. A potential schedule for t his position could work four days a week during peak season and the rem ainder of the hours during the off season. Schedule will be determined based on operational needs. This position will provide support to our faci lities team and will work with other to seasonal employees during the summer season. During pre and post season this pos i tion will support projects and program improvements at camp .

    Position Duties

    The Maintenance Assistant classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and hourly pay range is $26.22 - $33.45 for part-time, unbenefited employees. The Parks, Recreation , and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill two ( 2 ) Part-Time Unbenefited Maintenance Assistant vacancies in the Parks division at Family Camp in Yosemite.

    This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker classification series. This class is responsible for providing unskilled support for assigned maintenance operations and/or programs. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the Maintenance Worker I level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

    Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of entry level maintenance tasks, including but not limited to:


    • Building, grounds, and park maintenance


    • Knowledge of the use and care of common hand tools used in maintenance


    • Knowledge of landscape maintenance, pest control application and irrigation systems


    • Knowledge of and adherence to safe work practices and precautions


    • Awareness of the importance of safety in the workplace including the willingness and skills to communicate risks and hazards


    • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations and make simple measurements


    • Ability to perform manual labor


    • Ability to lift heavy weights (up to 50 pounds, or heavier weight)

    Employees in these positions may be required to work alternate shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

    Experience: No experience required.

    Licenses or Certificates: As a condition of employment in some designated positions, the following may be required:
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California; or
    • Possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements; or
    • Possession of a valid State of California Certified Commercial Applicator’s License.
    Physical Requirement: Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.

    Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year.

    Background Check: Candidates will be required to undergo a background check, including a criminal history records check, before being considered for a position.

    Multi-Tasking- Can handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously; has handled a wide variety of assignments in past and/or current position(s).

    Selection Process

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
