Position: Library Clerk - Part Time FLSA: Non-Exempt Department: Circulation/Library
Work Site: Municipal Building Schedule: Scheduled 19 hours per week including evenings and/or weekends. Hours and days of the week may vary and rotate on a monthly basis. Reports To: Supervising Library Technician Positions Supervised: None

Job Summary

Under direction of the Supervising Library Technician, the employee performs clerical work involving processing of library materials and related work as required. All responsibilities will be performed in an accurate, timely, professional, and courteous manner.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Collects returned materials such as books, magazines, and audiovisual materials from book drop and other locations; checks in returned materials via computer; checks computer system for reserves or messages; checks materials for damage; prepares damage reports if applicable; sorts materials according to classification codes and shelves accordingly.
  • Creates and updates library accounts for borrowers and computer users; obtains and verifies required personal data from borrowers and computer users and inputs into the computer system.
  • Assists borrowers when checking out library materials utilizing the computer system; informs borrowers of return due dates for library materials; informs borrowers of fines, reserve fees, damage, and replacement fees.
  • Responds to inquiries, directing library users to appropriate staff or departments as needed for assistance.
  • Receives money and makes change.
  • Prepares materials for Parker County Library Association courier pick-up.
  • Receives material donations, writes receipts, and moves donations to processing area.
  • Enforces and monitors library rules and regulations as stipulated in the library's Code of Conduct; may contact proper authorities in cases of excessive misbehavior.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of clerical and modern office procedures and practices.
  • Working knowledge of automated library systems, personal computers, and peripheral office equipment such as printers, barcode scanners, photocopiers, cash registers, and calculators.
  • Strong knowledge of alphabetical, numerical, and Dewey Decimal Classification filing systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally, whether in person or by telephone; ability to communicate effectively in writing, including electronically.
  • Ability to read and understand procedures and simple manuals; ability to read titles of books and other materials; ability to read a computer screen.
  • Ability to interface with the public in stressful interactions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to write records and simple reports.
  • Spanish-speaking fluency is preferred.
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual levels of attendance are essential job functions and expectations of this position.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time while performing duties.
  • Ability to bend, climb, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crouch when replacing or retrieving library materials from shelves or cabinets.
  • Ability to push, pull, carry, and lift items weighing up to 30 pounds such as book carts, books, and other materials.
  • Ability to reach to perform activities; ability to reach overhead.
  • Fine dexterity with fingers and hands required to handle items.
  • Ability to speak clearly by telephone and in person.


Environmental Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed indoors in a library setting. Some library events may take place outdoors. There are no major environmental or safety hazards.
  • Work may be subject to time pressures, working closely with others as part of a team, frequent changes to tasks, dealing with irate people, noisy/distracting environment, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Work may be tedious and exacting.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Above knowledge and skill may be gained by six months of responsible clerical experience involving typing/computer use OR by completion of at least high school level office practices and typing/computer courses OR by any combination of training and experience leading to the described level of knowledge and skill.
