Traffic Control Technician

About the Traffic Control division
The mission of the Traffic Control division is t o ensure the safe and efficient movement of persons and goods throughout the Mohave County road network. We are located at 3715 Sunshine Drive, Kingman, AZ.

About the position
This position performs entry-level work setting up and maintaining traffic control devices for work zones.
  • Work schedule is Monday-Thursday (four days/10-hour shift)
  • May have to work on weekends/holidays depending on circumstances.
  • Occasional overtime is possible.
  • Occasional travel throughout Mohave County.
  • Interaction with the public.

Compensation
Hiring Range: Range 9/ Steps 1-7 ($17.36-$20.73)

  • Must pass pre-employment background screening.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License for operation of motor vehicles at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to read, interpret and implement detailed Work Zone Traffic Control plans in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Mohave County Public Works Policies and Procedures.


  • Adhere to all established governmental guidelines for uniformity, proper location of sign and meeting standards in the interest of public safety.
  • Computer skills to include data entry, website navigation and e-mail.

  • Maintain accurate records of daily activities including work done, materials used and time spent and set up/maintain portable message boards.

  • Clean, maintain and repair work zone devices, equipment and tools used during the performance of work assignments.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of signs, barricades and equipment.

  • Ensure an adequate supply of materials, equipment and tools required to fulfill work assignments.
  • Utilize various hand tools and other related equipment in the assembly, installation and repair of traffic control devices.
  • Installation of chip seal tabs
  • Assist in the process of Spotting and Zoning roads for paint striping.
  • Forklift operation.
  • Provide support to the Litter Removal Program.
  • Conducts daily safety inspections of vehicles and equipment and follows all safety rules.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree).
  • Any experience in construction or a related field involving installation and maintenance of work zone signs.

  • OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.


SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT

  • Obtain both Forklift Operation and Flagger certifications within six (6) months of appointment to this position.
  • Obtain American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Traffic Control Technician certification within one (1) year of appointment to this position.

  • Methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment associated with Work Zone Traffic Control.
  • Basic computer skills.

  • Department policies, rules and procedures

  • Safe use and care of tools and equipment used in the operation and implementation of Work Zone Traffic Control Devices.
  • Communicating and maintaining professionalism with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.


  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Adjust to a variety of job assignments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with general public and associate personnel.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation.

With over 13,400 square miles, Mohave County is the fifth largest county in the U.S., and sixth largest county by population in Arizona .
