Additional pay differentials are available for college education, military service, and prior law enforcement experience.JOB SUMMARYA “Corrections Officer” supervises inmates assigned to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPlace personal restraints such as handcuffs on inmates for transporting.Observe conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes.Supervise and direct inmates to appropriate holding locations.Monitor inmate behavior and actions for evidence of prohibited activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude.Report observations to supervisors.Employ weapons or physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates, if necessary.Escort inmates to and from holding and cell areas.Prepare written reports concerning incidents of inmate disturbances or injuries.Operate radio to receive instructions and notify supervisors of work efforts in progress.Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean condition.Report malfunctions in facility equipment to supervisors for corrective action.Accompany medical personnel in conducting medical examinations.ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIESAnswer incoming telephone calls and route to appropriate personnel.Provide guidance and training to newly assigned correctional officers.Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and joint law enforcement efforts.Assist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters and in the facilitation of public evacuation efforts.Perform all other duties of a “Transportation Officer,” as needed.Perform the duties of a “Deputy,” as needed.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis job has no supervisory responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONSJobholders must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and legally able to work in the United States.Education and ExperienceAssociate's degree or equivalent from a university or college.Six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training.Equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and/or other employees.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.Ability to interpret statistical tables and graphs.Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsP.O.S.T. Certification Required.Firearm Certification Required Annually.Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License.Other Skills and AbilitiesBasic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services.Basic skills in the operation of computers and copy machines; basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required.Emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals, inmates, and criminal suspects and perpetrators.Ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations.Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.Ability to work on 12-hour rotating shifts.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe job requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; talking or hearing; and tasting and smelling. The employee must occasionally drive a vehicle in the transporting of prisoners and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may need to run and jump when required. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical stamina and ability to handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression are essential.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment requires constant awareness of personal safety and utmost care to ensure security and safety in performing job duties. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, occasional toxic or caustic chemicals, and explosives.
