Position QualificationsAn appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify an applicant for the position. Example of acceptable qualifications: High School diploma or GED; Firefighter II (240 CARD) and Paramedic Certification, and currently in the OP & F OR OPERS pension system. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to handle the physical requirements of the job and availability to work shift assignments.Licensure or Certification RequirementsState of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license; Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician certification.Distinguishing Job CharacteristicsUnder general supervision, fights fires; protects and saves lives/property; encourages fire prevention. Maintains fire equipment and facilities. Firefighter shifts are normally 24 hours with 48 hours off between shifts. Work involves hazardous work combined with a variety of routine assignments while on‑duty. Firefighters may be assigned to drive fire apparatus in addition to other responsibilities.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesRespond to emergency medical calls, fire alarms, and follow firefighting and rescue strategies as directed by the Incident Commander.Extinguish fires by placing hoses and ladders, climbing ladders, operating pumps, directing streams of water, and using other extinguishing agents as appropriate. Operate aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, and other hand tools when needed. Work inside, outside, or on top of burning and other smoke‑filled structures; rescue persons trapped in burning buildings; protect and preserve lives and property.Respond to vehicle and boating accidents, drownings, heart attacks, hazardous material spills, and other emergency situations. Administer emergency medical care and CPR; assist injured persons.Respond to other situations such as flooded basements, gas leaks, and other requests.Conduct salvage operations: place salvage covers, remove excess water, shovel debris, patch windows/holes, and perform cleanup as directed. Assist in fire investigations to determine origin of fire when requested.Clean and maintain equipment in safe operating condition; refuel vehicles; refill water tanks; recharge air bottles and extinguishers; clean trucks and hand tools; dry and reload hoses; perform other work needed to return vehicle and equipment to service.Maintain vehicles and equipment in proper mechanical operational condition. Use daily and weekly checklists to ensure proper operation. Refer major mechanical repairs to the vehicle maintenance department.Perform general maintenance and housekeeping duties to fire division facilities, buildings, and grounds; cut grass, sweep and wash floors, clean living areas, perform general repair work; check, flush, and paint hydrants as needed.Perform fire prevention duties: inspect commercial/public buildings, train hospital/school personnel in evacuation procedures and use of extinguishers, make presentations on fire prevention to various age groups.Complete fire and EMS run sheets, equipment check records, and other documentation as necessary.Maintain/improve rescue, firefighting, and emergency medical skills: attend training sessions, study material concerning fire hazards and firefighting/rescue methods, maintain current knowledge of department technology, City Street/landmark locations, and all division equipment.Other Duties and ResponsibilitiesConduct tours of firehouse and equipment to school children/public, promoting fire prevention and safety.Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of firefighting, emergency medical skills, CPR, general building construction and materials, firefighting safety precautions, local street locations and landmarks.Ability to learn technical firefighting and emergency rescue/emergency medical principles and techniques; perform strenuous tasks under hazardous, stressful, inclement and uncomfortable conditions; withstand heights; lift persons and heavy objects; exercise sound judgment in emergencies; take orders; work as a team; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law enforcement officers, and general public; work effectively in closed spaces.Skill in use of firefighting and rescue equipment; fighting fires; emergency medical techniques while responding to emergency situations.Age RequirementsApplicants must be at least 18 years of age for Firefighter appointment.
