Assignment will depend on need; selected applicants must be willing to work in any county in Maryland.Job OverviewThe main purpose of this position is to expose young men and women to the duties and responsibilities of a Maryland State Trooper and better prepare them to become Troopers when they reach the age of 21. Cadets are assigned to duties that do not require police authority and will generally perform work under the supervision of a Trooper at a truck‑inspection station or on patrol.Minimum QualificationsUnited States citizen.Age: May complete the application at 17, may begin work at 18, and must be appointed before turning 20.Residency: Not required to be a Maryland resident initially; must become a Maryland resident on the date of appointment.High school diploma or GED (applicants may start the process in the final year of high school).Valid driver's license in any state and a satisfactory driving record (no more than 3 points).Excellent physical condition.Binocular visual acuity 20/20 with or without correction.Good reputation and sound moral character.No current court orders related to domestic violence.Truthful at all stages of the application process.No illegal marijuana use within 1 year before application.No illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance (other than marijuana) or narcotic drug for any purpose within 3 years before application.Selection ProcessCompletion of the online application to the indicated stop point.Attendance of an applicant orientation.Functional fitness assessment test.Written exam.Submission of the entire online application.Oral interview.Polygraph.Background investigation.Medical testing.Police selection committee review.BenefitsThe Maryland State Police offers a comprehensive compensation package for its Cadets.
