Corrections Officer

OverviewThe Corrections Officer is an entry‐level position within the Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) focused on ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of inmates, staff, and the public in a jail post. The role includes close supervision, direct inmate supervision, and participation in all aspects of inmate welfare, safety, and security.Salary & PromotionBase Salary: $58,349.50 per year / $4,862.46 per monthStep 1: $60,099.99 per year / $5,008.33 per month (after first year and successful completion of Academy)Senior Corrections Officer: $62,936.41 per year / $5,244.70 per month (after second year and promotional exam)Additional experience levels:5+ years with intermediate license: $61,099.99 per year (Senior CO $64,824.51 per year if eligible)10+ years with advanced license: $65,672.88 per year (Senior CO $68,772.32 per year if eligible)ResponsibilitiesAssist Post Officers and perform duties away from the post to ensure smooth building operation.Procuring supplies, delivering paperwork, responding to assistance calls.Manage mail, commissary, laundry, and other activities as needed.Conduct inmate searches and cell searches.Assist with inmate counts, update and print count sheets, move lists, and document statistical data.Support meal distribution.Resolve inmate requests and complaints.Maintain cleanliness, security, and maintenance of the building and grounds.Perform cleanup detail as assigned.Note security breaches and concerns.Conduct outside perimeter security checks at least once per shift.Observe recreation and special inmate work details when applicable.Take appropriate actions for rule infractions, including counseling and reporting.Escort and process inmates into and out of units; monitor movements and ensure court/program attendance.Escort official visitors and others within the building.Monitor religious services and programs.Rotate assignments for other staff members.Respond to crisis situations such as fights, fire alarms, medical emergencies following policy and procedure.Maintain information logs and manage assigned equipment such as keys, radios, and vehicles.Perform other duties as assigned.Education & ExperienceU.S. citizenship required.Minimum age 20; 21 for armed assignments.High school diploma or GED.Annual weapon qualification per TCSO standards.Physical Readiness Test meeting TCSO policy.Licenses, Registrations, CertificationsJailer's License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within one year of employment.Valid driver's license; must obtain a Texas driver's license within 90 days.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge ofCustody laws, regulations, and procedures.Penal Code, Criminal Procedure, Rules of Evidence, Family Code, Civil statutes, Regulatory Agency Codes, Texas Jail Standards.Federal, State, Local, and County applicable laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines.Jail management practices and procedures.Local ordinances and TCOLE standards regarding commitment, confinement, and release.Skill inBasic computer operations: online searches, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and office equipment.Use of detention and law enforcement equipment.Basic conflict resolution and community relations.Clear verbal and written communication.Ability toWork as a team member within a diverse organization.Read and understand basic legal documents.Interact with people beyond giving instructions.Perform under stress and emergency situations.Maintain discipline and order in the jail.Make decisions and take prompt action during emergencies.Prepare and maintain routine records and logs.Establish effective working relationships as required.Take physical control of another person.Physical RequirementsLift/carry 20–50 pounds; lift a 40‑pound self‑contained breathing apparatus; lift and drag a 150‑lb. person 75 feet for emergency evacuation.Work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.Stand, walk, sit, jog, run, and perform repetitive motions; climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and balance.Work in a stressful environment with prolonged customer contact.Potential exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous waste, and foul odors.Physical restraint of hostile subjects; participate in defensive tactics and annual refresher training.Communicate in clear English during emergencies.Contact & Additional InformationMultiple positions available.Work Hours: Shift work including holidays, nights, and weekends.Department: Travis County Sheriff OfficeLocation: Austin, TXFor updates or questions, contact: Monica.Risaliti@traviscountytx.govTCOLE exam required, physical and psychological exam, drug and alcohol test, criminal, credit, driving, education, and employment background checks required.NOTE : This job description is generic and not exhaustive; duties may vary based on assignments.
