Overview The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (Base Camp), to be completed in 2026. The public-facing portion will be the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, including a pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and an event space. The culmination is a nighttime experience in the courtyard. The Security Officer role focuses on determent of crime through presence, patrols, attention to detail, sound judgment, and prompt communication of security concerns. The position entails screening station duties, entry point oversight, patrols, and emergency response with a welcoming, enthusiastic attitude. A flexible work schedule is required, including three shift variations (days, evenings, nights), weekends, holidays, potential short-notice reporting, and overtime.Your ImpactResponsibilities IncludeObserve and report safety concerns, security breaches and unusual circumstances during self-inspections of secure facilities; deter, detect, and prevent incidents; preserve order and enforce policies and procedures. Perform hourly building patrols using an automated patrol tracking system, including walking on uneven surfaces and climbing stairs. (50%)Respond to emergency matters; perform rescue functions; maintain poise in high-stress situations; may assume initial command post or act as on-scene commander until a higher-ranking official arrives. Stay on duty to support the Security team during emergencies and staff shortages until relieved by a Supervisor. (20%)Operate and monitor security screening systems to ensure proper screening of individuals entering designated areas; maintain professionalism and courtesy to minimize disruption to visitor experience. Conduct secondary screening as needed and escalate incidents with supervisors. Maintain and report malfunctions of screening equipment. (30%)Minimum EducationHigh School diplomaMinimum Years And Type Of ExperienceMinimum 2 years of physical security experienceA background in Military, Law Enforcement, or security in high-traffic public venues or screening environments is preferredNecessary Knowledge And SkillsCertifications and Experience: Valid driver's license and ability to be commissioned as an Unarmed Special Police Officer by the District of Columbia within 1 month of hire.
