Position Description
Under supervision and training from a Cytogenetic Technologist, the incumbent prepares, examines, and analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, and blood, to aid in diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. May perform advanced technical duties in the diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognition and classification under supervision and training of a Cytogenetic Technologist. At the successful completion of the training program, the incumbent will be encouraged to take the ASCP exam. During the two-year period, trainees work on a lab rotation learning each aspect of the genetic testing.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Answering, screening and routing phone and email inquiries from clients, physicians, vendors and external companies in coordination of clinical services. Forwarding messages and triaging calls.
  • Receives, organizes and processes clinical specimens accurately. Identifies worksheet, adding new patients to laboratory LIS system, and specimen problems and demonstrates ability to resolve or elevate to supervisor appropriately.
  • Work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual.
  • Loading and unloading the automated slide scanner GSL as need basis Assists with DNA extraction and Tape station usage.
  • Assists with G-banding for chromosome analysis.
  • Assisting with monthly quality assurance data/matrix needs under the directive of the supervisor.
  • Billing- Sending fee sheets to clients and populating, generating and circulating the monthly invoices after review of the supervisor. Contact clients if any insurance paperwork or clinical history is missing especially in outpatients.


Required Qualifications
BS or BA degree in a life science field is required. One to three years' experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician may also be considered.
