The City of Olathe is seeking a skilled Senior Maintenance Worker to join our Solid Waste Division. This senior-level position is ideal for someone who takes pride in hands-on work, values safety, and enjoys solving problems in the field. In this role, you will perform advanced maintenance and repair work on solid waste equipment, containers, and facilities. You will also support division operations and help guide less experienced team members. Your work will help ensure reliable service for residents and businesses throughout the Olathe community.
We are looking for a skilled maintenance professional who can work independently, lead by example, and contribute to a team focused on service, safety, and reliability. Candidates must hold a valid State of Kansas Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License and maintain a favorable driving record.
Physical and Work Environment
This is a physically demanding position with work performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. The role regularly requires:
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
- Pushing and pulling containers up to 300 pounds
- Frequent bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling
- Walking long distances and standing for extended periods
- Climbing in and out of large vehicles and onto equipment
- Working in varying weather conditions and around dust, odors, noise, traffic, and moving equipment

The Solid Waste Maintenance Worker III is a senior-level role responsible for performing advanced maintenance and welding tasks using a variety of equipment including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps, and various other vehicles and equipment. Provides support to Operations and Route Supervisors within the Solid Waste Division. Responsibilities include repairs of solid waste containers, equipment, and facilities. This role also provides general support to city staff, including interacting with the public regarding assigned programs and services. Employees in this position work independently and take on a leadership role, training and mentoring Maintenance Worker I's and II's. This is the third level in the Solid Waste Maintenance Worker career progression, which includes levels I, II and III.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs the most difficult and complex types of duties and provides the oversight of other maintenance workers performing work in dangerous and hazardous environments.
- Operates a variety of equipment including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps and various other vehicles and equipment.
- Responds to questions and concerns from the general public, contractors, and businesses.
- Participates in housekeeping duties, grounds and building maintenance.
- Performs on-call duties and overtime and other duties as required.
- Fills in on various routes and distributes public education materials to relevant programs and authorities.
- Operates division equipment and vehicles, resolves customer service requests, and responds to public inquiries professionally and efficiently.; plays an active role in fostering a safety culture within the division; ensures adherence to safe work practices and compliance with federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of five years of skilled general maintenance and repair experience is required. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial.
Education : A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement and favorable driving record are required.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Regularly lifts and carries bags and debris weighing up to 50lbs, and pushes and pulls trash containers weighing up to 300lbs. Repeatedly bends, twists, pushes, pulls and reaches throughout the workday. Walks long distances and stands for extended periods, often on uneven or rough terrain. Frequently climbs in and out of large collection vehicles onto equipment. Operates and maintains trucks, and other machinery requiring manual dexterity and coordination. Works in varying weather conditions, often exposed to dusty, odors, noise, and traffic. Maintains situational awareness while working around moving equipment and in high-traffic areas. Performs physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
