    The Position

    The Crossing Guard position is a vital role that supports the Police Department's mission to ensure public safety by escorting school children safely across designated intersections during morning, lunch, and afternoon periods. As a valued member of our traffic safety team, the Crossing Guard plays a key role in protecting the lives of children, modeling safe pedestrian behavior, and promoting a culture of awareness and discipline in the community.

    Experience and Training Guidelines

    The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. Knowledge of: safety rules and regulations. Ability to: pass a physical examination, including drug testing; demonstrate good moral character with no felony convictions including passing a background investigation. Communicate effectively with children, citizens and co-workers. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Education and Experience Guidelines Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education/Training: Equivalent of the completion of the twelfth grade. Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Must be able to work well with children, have transportation and be available for contact by telephone.

    Physical Demands and Working Environment

    The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions. Environment: Outdoor field environment; exposure to traffic, noise, dust, fumes and inclement weather conditions. Travel from site to site. Physical: Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for light carrying; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; stepping up and down; reaches shoulder height frequently as well as reaches above and below shoulder height; occasional bending; judging distances in order to anticipate the possibility of a speeding vehicle being unable to stop for the crosswalk. Work Location: Throughout Camarillo at designated school crossings. May work at other sites. Work Hours: Position will work on an "as needed/on call" basis. Crossing Guards typically work approximately 3 to 4 hours daily between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours are determined by the needs and schedule of the particular school to which the Crossing Guard is assigned. Schedules are subject to change on short notice due to inclement weather or emergencies.
