    DESCRIPTION

    The Long Beach City Attorney seeks to employ a full-time Workers’ Compensation defense attorney with 0-3 years experience. We require self-motivation, strong organizational and writing skills and a willingness to litigate Workers’ Compensation cases from inception to resolution.
    SPECIAL NOTE
    This is an "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the City Attorney, and can be released at any time. In such an event, the candidate is not afforded the right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Compose routine letters and memoranda;
    • Handling all aspects and phases of the file, including investigation, discovery, pleadings, evaluation, hearings, motions, trial and appeals;
    • Ability to work both individually and with the City’s Claim’s professionals, and a good working knowledge of the Workers’ Compensation claims process and the Labor laws of California;
    • The individual will appear at the various Workers’ Compensation boards in the Southern California area;
    • Perform other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    • Graduation from an accredited School of Law;
    • A member of the California State Bar in good standing;
    • A valid California Class C driver's license.


    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL DEMONSTRATE
    • 1-3 years Workers’ Compensation experience;
    • Workers’ Compensation defense litigation experience a plus;
    • Certified legal specialist in Workers’ Compensation a plus;
    • Communicates clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
    • Strong writing and legal research skills, including Lexis;
    • Solid organizational and multi-tasking skills;
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and ensure timely completion;
    • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Windows 7;
    • Works independently with minimal supervision and instruction;
    • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of personnel;
    • Demonstrates discretion in dealing with confidential matters;
    • Good attendance, professional appearance and demeanor.
