    What does a Helper, Pipe Trades do?
    Positions allocable to this class perform various pipe repairs, maintenance, and installations, plumbing, and other tasks. This work includes the more routine, semi-skilled tasks.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Assists water service crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of service connections, water mains, meters, hydrants, and water storage and pumping plant equipment.
    • Excavation work, as needed, in connection with the alteration, repair, or installation of pipes, tanks, and other equipment, using pneumatic tools to break concrete surfaces when necessary.
    • Locates and removes stoppages in waste lines.
    • Assists in fitting, laying, hanging, connecting, and testing pipe.
    • Installs or assembles fixtures and appliances connected to plumbing and drainage systems.
    • Cuts and threads pipes and leads and caulks joints.
    • Brazes and solders copper tubing and piping.
    • Maintains tools and equipment.
    • Cleans work area.
    • Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.
    • Assists in the installation and maintenance of insulating materials.
    • Operates power-driven pipe machines.
    • Replaces washers and assists in repairing valves, thermostats, radiators, and other plumbing fixtures and appliances.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
    One year's (1) full-time experience, or 1920 hours of part-time/hourly experience assisting in pipe fitting work*.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Additional points will be given to applicants who possess the following:
    • Additional years of experience as mentioned in Requirements, beyond the required 1 year.
    • Successful completion of a state or trade union/council recognized, in-person pipe-trade or pre-apprenticeship training program.**
    • Successful completion of a state or trade union/council recognized pipe-trade apprenticeship program.**

    DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

    A valid California Class C Driver License is required*** to perform job-related essential functions. For positions that require driving, successful applicants must acquire and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not submit their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    *Pipe Fitting Work refers to installing, repairing, and maintaining piping systems for water, gas, and waste in residential and commercial settings.
    ** To receive credit for any of the listed certificates or programs , applicants must include a legible scan or photo of their original certificate or letter from the authorizing organization on letterhead, acknowledging successful completion of program, as an upload at time of filing or as an e-mail attachment within 10 business days from the last day of filing.

    ***To receive credit for the required California Driver License, applicants must include a picture or scan of their current driver license as an upload at time of filing or as an e-mail attachment within 10 business days from the last day of filing.

    WITHHOLD INFORMATION:

    OUT-OF-CLASS INFORMATION:
    If you performed work that differs from the duties described in your class specification and you believe qualifies you for this opportunity, please describe the out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. We also encourage you to submit any supporting documentation such as out of class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist our review of your qualifications.
    PHYSICAL CLASS IV - Arduous:
    This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT:
    Veterans may be eligible for Veteran's Credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. In order to be considered for Veteran's Credit, we will need a copy of the applicant's form DD214 to review. A clear, legible scan or picture the form DD214 must be uploaded to the application or e-mailed to the exam analyst at fsanchez@parks.lacounty.gov as soon as possible so, if you are eligible for veteran's credit, we can include it before promulgating the list of eligible candidates. If e-mailed, the message must include "Arbo. Gardener - Vet. Credit" in the subject line and the applicant's name and the exam number in the body.

    Additional Information

    EXAM CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of a Training & Experience Assessment which will evaluate training and experience as listed on the Supplemental Questionnaire and Work History Sections, and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This evaluation is worth 100% of the total score.

    Applicants MUST meet the requirements AND achieve the passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible list.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE:
    The application includes a supplemental questionnaire at the end.
    • Responses will be evaluated to ensure job requirements are met.
    • Responses will also be evaluated to generate a score using a standardized system, based on the required and desirable qualifications.
    • All requested and pertinent information must be submitted to ensure accurate evaluation.


    ELIGIBILITY & VACANCY INFORMATION:
    Candidates receiving a passing score will be placed on a list in the order of the score group for a period of 12 months.
    We may use an alternative banding method in line with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D)
