    Essential Job Functions

    What does a Carpenter do?

    The Carpenter p erforms journey-level carpentry work on new construction, alteration and repair projects. They are also responsible for constructing scaffolding, building forms, layering floors, and erecting framing. Incumbents are required to exercise a knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology, and accident prevention precautions of the trade and the ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions.

    Some essential duties include:

    • Engages in all types of rough and finish carpentry on buildings.
    • Does milling, woodturning and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instructions.
    • Constructs scaffolding, builds forms, lays floors, and erects framing.
    • Assembles, installs and repairs office and institutional furnishings.
    • Makes and fits doors, window sashes and screens.
    • Maintains materials tools and equipment.
    • Supervise apprentices and helpers, as needed.
    • Drives automotive equipment to work sites.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
    In order to be considered, individuals must satisfy one of the options listed below.

    • Option I: Completion of a recognized carpenter apprentice training program* of at least four years' duration.

    • Option II: Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.**


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    * A recognized carpenter apprentice training program is defined as a program that has earned nationally recognized credentials from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, the State of California, and the U.S. Department of Labor. In order to receive credit for a carpenter training program, a legible copy of your certificate, diploma, transcript, or official documentation from the institution must be attached with your application at the time of filing OR email it within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of application filing to pgaldones@hr.lacounty.gov . Please include exam number and exam title in your email. Applications received without proof of the required training program will not be considered as meeting the stated requirements.

    We do not accept password-protected documents. Ensure documents are unlocked before attaching to your application or sending to the exam analyst.

    ** Journey-level carpentry work is work that requires extensive knowledge of the craft such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings, milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Please ensure application contains detailed information specifically addressing journey level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. Also, the required technical experience can be a combination of County and/or outside experience.

    WITHHOLD INFORMATION:

    No withholds will be allowed for this examination. Required experience must be fully met and clearly indicated on the application by the last day of filing.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    Once we have identified that you meet our requirements, an invitation regarding the following assessment processes will be sent:

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This exam will consist of two (2) parts.

    PART I: A qualifying multiple choice test assessing:
    • Knowledge of architectural plans and schematic diagrams
    • Knowledge of methods and practices as applied in the construction, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures
    • Knowledge of the design, use, and maintenance of materials, tools, and machinery
    • Knowledge of provisions of applicable rules and regulations pertaining to installation and repair of structures and fixtures
    • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and standards

    Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on Part I in order to have their Part II Evaluation of Training and Experience calculated and scored.

    PART II: An Evaluation of Training and Experience, weighted 100%, assessing:
    • Experience preparing project layouts
    • Experience cutting, shaping, and fastening materials using various tools
    • Experience verifying structural alignment and making necessary adjustments
    • Experience assembling, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures


    Applicants must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on Part II of the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list.

    EXAM REVIEW
    Multiple-choice and/or simulation assessments are not reviewable by candidates per CSR 7.19.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS
    If you recently took identical components for other exams, the test responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    TEST PREPARATION
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION
    Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.

    Note: We may use an alternative banding method in line with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
