    Description

    Basic Function

    Under moderate supervision, assists in identifying defects and processing warranty claims, and providing input for technical specifications of new buses and equipment.

    Examples of Duties

    • Investigates and tests new bus malfunctions and parts failures
    • Instructs Division mechanics during campaign modifications
    • Assists in the development of design modifications for new buses and vehicular equipment
    • Assists in the inspection of buses and related equipment at manufacturing sites and Metro property
    • Assists in developing technical specifications for equipment purchases
    • Prepares written correspondence and reports in support of warranty claims and relating to other work performed
    • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out


    Minimum Qualifications

    • 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least 2 years as a bus mechanic
    • Successful completion of a six month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience
    • Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable
    • Valid California Class A driver's license

    Knowledge
    • Advanced methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the inspection and testing of new transit vehicle components and their major electrical systems
    • Shop math
    • Vehicle operations and safety

    Abilities
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
    • Communicate effectively with others
    • Perform advanced troubleshooting of vehicular equipment functioning
    • Read manufacturers' parts and maintenance manuals
    • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
    • Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles
    • Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds
    • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English


    Special Conditions
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
    • Must provide own tools of the trade
    • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
