    About the Department

    The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, high-performance, “all hazard” fire department, responding to approximately 93,000 calls for service each year from 34 Fire Stations. SJFD’s service area includes a number of high-hazard occupancies, including an international airport; a general aviation reliever airport; five major hospitals (including two trauma centers, and five emergency departments); the SAP Center, home of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks (17,500 capacity); PayPal Park, home of MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes (18,000 capacity); San José State University (the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast) with a student population of 33,409; three super regional malls; approximately 100 high-rise structures; and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

    Position Duties

    The San José Fire Department is currently seeking to fill two (2) full-time Network Technician I/II/III vacancies in the Bureau of Administrative Services (BAS).

    The salary ranges for these classifications are:
    • Network Technician I: $76,396.32 - $93,103.92
    • Network Technician II: $89,849.76 - $109,221.84
    • Network Technician III: $99,568.56 - $121,080.96

    The salary ranges includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    The Network Technician I/II/III is responsible for supporting critical Fire Department operations by providing significant technical support in areas such as ensuring network connectivity for remote locations and fire apparatus/vehicles, and supporting an enterprise desktop/client environment; including the latest Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365 suite, mobile devices, and additional enterprise-grade hardware and software.

    The primary day-to-day duties of this position include system administration and deployment of desktop hardware and software, configuration/deployment/management of mobile devices, as well as resolving various end-user help requests.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Providing support for Windows 11 PCs (desktops and laptops), Microsoft 365 suite, and various office productivity or other client applications.
    • Providing support for mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones, apparatus MDCs and their associated applications.
    • Providing Tier 1 WAN support for data network connecting almost 40 Fire Department locations.
    • Providing Tier 1 and 2 support to VOIP networks and devices (Webex, Zoom)
    • Creating and maintaining desktop, laptop, and mobile images/configurations.
    • Responding to incidents and/or requests from end-users via telephone, email, or helpdesk tickets, and resolving them in a timely and courteous manner.
    • Triaging, prioritizing, and resolving helpdesk tickets.
    • Configuring, deploying, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware and software for department PCs (desktops and laptops), printers, peripherals, and network or other communications hardware.
    • Creating and managing Active Directory objects such as users and computers.
    • Deploying patches, and OS or other assorted updates to PCs and mobile devices using software tools, custom scripts, or other automated tools/processes.
    • Responding to, and remediating, desktop-level cybersecurity vulnerabilities or incidents.
    • Creating and maintaining documentation for helpdesk tickets, knowledge bases, system administration procedures, etc.
    • Evaluating documented resolutions and analyzing trends to find methods for preventing future problems.
    • Performing duties with minimum supervision, while following all policies, procedures, processes, and best practices, in order to make good judgment calls for resolving or escalating system issues.
    • Administering multiple forms of MFA (multi-factor authentication).
    • Assisting with IT-related tasks involved in planning, construction, remodeling, or activation of locations/facilities.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Network Technician I

    Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) AND six (6) months of college-level coursework equivalent to 15 semester/22 quarter units or vocational training or technology technician apprenticeship, both covering computer- related work such as computer and mobile endpoints repair, technical troubleshooting, application support, or other related duties.

    Acceptable Substitution

    Six (6) months of qualifying experience may substitute for the college-level education.

    Required Licensing
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.


    Network Technician II

    One (1) year of college-level coursework equivalent to 30 semester/45 quarter units or vocational training or technology technician apprenticeship AND one (1) year of experience, both covering computer-related work such as computer and mobile endpoints repair, technical troubleshooting, application support, or other related duties.

    Acceptable Substitution

    Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the college-level education on a year-for-year basis.

    Required Licensing
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
    • Possess a valid CompTIA A+ certificate, or equivalent professional, industry recognized certification acceptable to the City. One (1) additional year of related experience can substitute the CompTIA A+ requirement.


    Network Technician III

    Two (2) years of college-level coursework equivalent to 60 semester/90 quarter units or vocational training or technology technician apprenticeship AND two (2) years of experience, both covering computer-related work such as computer and mobile endpoints repair, technical troubleshooting, application support, or other related duties.

    Acceptable Substitution

    Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the college-level education requirement on a year-for- year basis.

    Required Licensing
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
    • Possess a valid CompTIA A+ certificate, or equivalent professional, industry recognized certification acceptable to the City. One (1) additional year of related experience can substitute the CompTIA A+ requirement.
    • Possess a valid Microsoft Specialist certification or an equivalent professional, industry recognized certification acceptable to the City within 6 months of hire.


    Other Qualifications

    Background : The selected candidate will need to submit to and successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation as required by the San José Police and Fire Department.

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history.

    Job Expertise - Demonstrates knowledge and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices in any combination of the areas below:
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Active Directory users and computer management, security groups, or Group Policies.
    • Knowledge of Windows networking such as DHCP, DNS, subnets, gateways, etc.
    • Ability to troubleshoot applications such as Microsoft Windows 11, Microsoft 365 suite, and other enterprise client applications.
    • Knowledge of creating, deploying, and troubleshooting desktop and laptop operating systems and images, managing and deploying Windows security patches or OS updates.
    • Ability to setup, troubleshoot, deploy, and maintain hardware and software for enterprise PCs, mobile devices, printers, and peripherals.
    • Experience creating and updating technical documentation.
    • Ability to perform all work in accordance with Citywide and departmental procedures & policies, as well as any applicable federal and state rules and regulations.

    Analytical Thinking - Approaches a problem or situation by using a logical, systematic, sequential approach.

    Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely, accurate, respectful, and friendly manner.
