    The City of Santa Fe Springs is seeking a highly-motivated individual for the position of Public Safety Officer I in the Department of Police & Community Services.

    Employment Type : Full-time position represented by the City of Santa Fe Springs City Employees Association.

    Work Schedule: Public Safety Officer I is assigned a 4/10 work schedule between the hours 6:00am - 4pm or 1:00pm -11:00pm. Incumbent may be required to work pre-scheduled evening meetings or weekend events.

    POSITION PURPOSE:
    Under general supervision, the Public Safety Officer; responds to calls throughout the City; interviews victims and witnesses and prepares accurate crime reports. Collects and secures evidence; performs traffic accident investigations. Provides support to police officers and fire suppression personnel. Performs traffic control during emergency situations. Assists the public with various issues, including criminal, civil, city business, and other related questions. Monitors and patrols City facilities, grounds and parks to enforce safety and security; secures and locks City facilities; enforces and monitors local, state, and vehicle code violations; issues parking citations; resolves criminal complaints and requests from city staff, residents and businesses, and performs related duties as required. In the absence of a Lead PSO or PSO II, the PSO I may serve as a shift lead and assist with training, evaluating and coordinating the work activities of subordinate personnel; performs related work as required.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    Receives direct supervision from the Lead Public Safety Officer and Public Safety Officer II.

    None

    Essential Job Specific Duties:
    • Monitors and patrols City facilities, grounds, and parks to enforce safety and security.
    • Responds to calls throughout the City.
    • Provides support to police officers and fire suppression personnel.
    • In the absence of a Lead PSO or PSO II, the PSO I may serve as a shift lead and assist with training, evaluating and coordinating the work activities of subordinate personnel.
    • Participates in a variety of community, Department and City meetings.
    B. Other Job Specific Duties:
    • Assists the public with various issues, including criminal, civil, city business, and other related questions.
    • Participate in required staff meetings and in-service training.
    • Assists with Department Programs and City events and activities.
    • Follows upon all projects assigned by the Public Safety Officer Supervisor, Public Safety Manager, Assistant Director and/or the Director of Police Services.
    • Provides support for all Department Divisions.
    • Monitors and maintains a variety of logs and records; prepares reports.
    • Performs Public Safety Officer related duties as required.

    • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    • Operate and use modern office equipment, Mobile Data Computers.
    • Effectively organize and prioritize assigned work.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other people.
    • Follow written and oral instructions.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    The following requirements generally demonstrate possession of the minimum requisite knowledge and ability necessary to perform the duties of the position. A typical way to obtain these would be:
    • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California supplemented by college level coursework in criminal justice or a related field.
    • One(1) year of municipal public safety or law enforcement experience.
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
    • PC832 Laws of Arrest Certification within one year of appointment.
    • Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification within one year of appointment.


    NEPOTISM POLICY:
    Relatives may be appointed regardless of the designation of full or part-time classification. Candidates with relatives employed by the City will be excluded from applying for a vacancy if one or more of the following criteria exist: 1) The appointment of a relative would place one in a supervisory capacity directly over the other 2) The appointment would create a situation in which it is conceivable personal gain for one could be obtained by the actions of the other 3) The appointment would create a situation where performance or non-performance of either would have a direct effect upon the performance of the other 4) The appointment would create a situation where the confidentiality of either could be compromised. Candidates with relatives employed by the City will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. "Relative" shall be defined as: mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, spouse, domestic partner, step mother, step-father, step-sister, step-brother, stepchild and step grandchild.
