Job SummaryThe City of Olathe is hiring forFleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III, and IVpositions on ourLight Duty / Automotive team. Starting level and pay will be based on verified experience, certifications, and overall qualifications. Candidates who do not meet higher-level certification requirements may still be considered for placement at the appropriate technician level.
Schedule:Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
What You’ll Do• Diagnose and repair mechanical, brake, suspension, HVAC, and electrical issues
• Perform preventive maintenance on light-duty fleet vehicles and related equipment to keep City fleet operations safe and reliable
• Complete repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and other vehicle systems
• Assist with police vehicle upfitting and accessory installation, such as lights, radios, and related equipment
• Maintain accurate service and repair records
• Respond to emergency and after-hours service needs when required
What You’ll Work OnThis team supports maintenance and repair across a mix of light-duty City vehicles and equipment, including:
• sedans
• SUVs
• pickups
• small vans
• light utility trucks
• smaller trailers and compact equipment
Technician Level PlacementFleet Maintenance Technician I• Pay Range: $21.75-$24.97 per hour depending on qualifications
• Minimum Experience: 2 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
• Required Certification at Hire: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Fleet Maintenance Technician II• Pay Range: $23.75-$26.95 per hour depending on qualifications
• Minimum Experience: 3 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
• Required Certifications at Hire: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification, plus three certifications total: ASE Brakes, ASE Suspension/Steering, and one additional ASE or EVT certification
Fleet Maintenance Technician III• Pay Range: $25.50-$29.72 per hour depending on qualifications
• Minimum Experience: 6 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
• Required Certifications at Hire: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification, plus three ASE certifications total, including Brakes, Suspension/Steering, and one additional ASE. Additional EVT or specialty certifications may be required for certain assignments or advanced placement levels.
Fleet Maintenance Technician IV• Pay Range: $28.00-$33.20 per hour depending on qualifications
• Minimum Experience: 10 years of relevant automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
• Required Certifications at Hire: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification and ASE Master Mechanic credentials. Additional EVT or assignment-specific certifications may be required based on assignment.
Additional Requirements for All Levels• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record
• Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire. The City of Olathe offers a
free CDL training program that can be completed during the first 6 months of employment.

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.- Analyze vehicle and equipment failures; determine causes and recommend and/or complete repair solutions.
- Perform preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform vehicle and equipment repairs including but not limited to; Engine, Transmission, brake, suspension, hydraulic and electrical repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
- Perform equipment installation, fabrication, welding and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including after hours calls.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records and reports on repairs performed and on equipment usage and condition.
- Perform wide range of repairs on Police and Fire equipment.
- Could be required to stand in for Team Leader during an absence.
Experience & Qualification Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience: Minimum of six years of training and /or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair.Hydraulic experience preferred.
Education: High School graduate supplemented with course work in automotive technology.Trade school preferred /not required.
License & Certification(s): Possession of valid Class B CDL (with air brakes) required, or acquisition of said license within 6 months of employment required. A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification required.Combination of three (3) ASE certifications, two of which will be brakes and suspension, the third is choice.Heavy side would require F1 or F2 plus F3 and F4.Light side would require F1 or F2 plus L1 and ASE electrical.
Supervisory Training:Two (2) of city supplied training such as Documenting Discipline, FMLA, FLSA, or Legal Perspectives.
