    Current vacancies are with the Tulare County Fire Department located in various locations throughout Tulare County. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

    Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.

    Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then if you wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online.     Typical Duties

    • Plan and conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities to assess conformity with state and local fire safety codes and related ordinances.
    • Perform follow-up investigations to see that remedial action has been taken as directed.
    • Inspect fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, fire hydrant systems, pumping systems and water storage facilities.
    • Survey water systems to determine reliability of available water and flow for fire protection purposes.
    • Provide water survey information to fire control field personnel.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

    Education:
    • Equivalent to an Associate Arts Degree from an accredited college with major coursework in fire science, environmental health engineering, or a closely related field.


    Experience:
    • One year of full-time fire prevention inspection experience in a governmental Fire Prevention Bureau or a Fire Department or two years in the inspection or administration of related regulatory ordinances.


    Knowledge of:

    • Inspection methods and techniques.
    • Math sufficient to compute percentages, decimals and fractions.
    • Record keeping systems.
    • Types and methods of building construction related to fire and life-safety.
    • Basic fire science, fire terminology and fire behavior.


    Skill/Ability to :

    • Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
    • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
    • Identify fire and life-safety hazards and recommend appropriate corrective action.
    • Read, understand and interpret technical material such as National Fire Protection Association Fire Codes, State Fire Codes and local ordinances.

    License or Certificate
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.


    DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    Knowledge of:

    • National Fire Protection Standards, Uniform Fire Code, Uniform Building code, and related state and local laws.
    • Fire and life-safety systems used in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional facilities.
    • Types and uses of portable and automatic fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems, building elements, and fire-related assemblies.
    • Basic computer programs and data entry methods.


    Skill/Ability to:

    • Apply appropriate fire code standards to construction projects.
    • Read and interpret building plans.


    Education:

    • Completion of the State Fire Marshal Courses. “Fire Prevention 1A & 1B”; specialized training in construction materials and building codes.

    Conditions of Employment:
    Candidates selected may be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions. An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
