Job SummaryThe Recreation Data Technician supports Mono County’s tourism and economic development efforts by collecting data, providing visitor services, assisting with outreach, and supporting administrative and data collection activities. This seasonal position includes weekly staffing at Mono County visitor centers in collaboration with partner agencies, as well as office-based support for tourism communications, materials distribution, and data management. This position will be shared between the SOAR Division of the Public Works and the Economic Development Departments.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate is friendly, dependable, and enjoys working with the public, with the ability to communicate clearly and represent Mono County in a welcoming and professional manner. They are organized, adaptable, and able to balance visitor interaction with basic administrative tasks while working independently. Familiarity with Mono County’s communities, recreation, and local businesses is helpful, along with a willingness to learn and contribute positively to the visitor experience and local partnerships.
CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED : None; this is not a supervisory position.
About the County ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)
Visitor Center & Public Engagement- Visitor center staffing one to two days per week (likely weekends) in coordination with partners including the U.S. Forest Service, Sierra Forever, Yosemite National Park, and California State Parks staff, and volunteers
- Engage visitors to support data collection efforts and surveys
- Greet and assist visitors by providing information on local attractions, recreation, events, and businesses
- Distribute maps, brochures, and visitor guides
- Maintain a clean, welcoming visitor center environment
- Provide suggestions for improving data collection methods based on field experience
Outreach & Materials Distribution- Organize and distribute tourism materials to local businesses and visitor locations
- Assist with outreach to local businesses and community partners
- Support larger events and peak visitation periods, including fall color season and community events
Administrative & Communications Support- Monitor and respond to messages and comments on Mono County Tourism & Economic Development social media platforms
- Return messages left on the 800-tourism line
- Monitor and respond to the tourism inbox, forwarding inquiries as appropriate
- Make minor website updates (event listings, business listings, etc.)
- Prepare and process mail fulfillment requests

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- A High school diploma or higher education degree
- Experience working in a position that involved data collection or visitor services.
- Relevant experience in managing inter-agency agreements, GIS/cartography, graphic design, grant administration, and project management is desired
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within Mono County
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Sit or stand for extended periods; frequently stand and walk in both indoor and outdoor settings; sufficient manual dexterity; Ability to climb, stoop, crouch, and kneel; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, and copiers; ability to operate an automobile.
Additional Information TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS - One to two days per week in June Lake, Lee Vining, and/or Bridgeport
- Office work based in Mammoth Lakes or Bridgeport
- Weekend work required (Friday - Sunday availability)
- Some holidays required (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day)
- Some standing, lifting, and light physical work required
*Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments; driving to different locations throughout the County; continuous contact with other staff and the public. Work is performed in varying temperatures and conditions, exposure to dust, chemicals, and outdoor hazards.
