    Job Summary

    The Real-Time Captioner (may be referred to as CART/Communication Access Realtime Translation Provider) facilitates the communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff, and university guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and the university community. Real-time captioning/CART facilitates communication by converting the spoken word into instant text by using court-reporting methods, a laptop computer and/or a steno machine.

    Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

    Key Responsibilities

    • The Realtime Captioner/CART provides communication access by conveying verbal instruction into a mode of communication best understood by the deaf, hard-of-hearing and/or otherwise disabled individuals including students, faculty, staff and university guests.

    Time Base/Duration of Appointment

    Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    The salary range for this classification is $69.46 to $74.97 per hour.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    The ideal candidate is a highly skilled captioner who can type a minimum of 200 words per minute and produce accurate real-time transcripts using Realtime software and related technology. They demonstrate strong attention to detail, excellent listening skills, and a solid command of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. With a general knowledge of Deaf Culture, the candidate adapts to a wide range of access needs and remains flexible when course modalities shift between in-person and remote formats.

    The ideal candidate stays current with evolving technical terminology and software and exercises sound judgment when accepting assignments based on skill level, topic familiarity, setting, and consumer needs. While primarily supporting registered BMAC students, they are also prepared to provide captioning services to faculty, staff, and university guests when appropriate. They work effectively with consumers, communicate professionally and diplomatically with colleagues and staff, and adhere to industry-recognized codes of ethics, professional standards of practice, and confidentiality requirements.

Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to graduation from a court reporting school and a minimum of six months experience providing real-time captioning services required, preferably in a higher education setting.

    • Realtime Captioners/CART must complete a Court Reporting Training Program.

    Physical Summary

    Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

    Additional Information

    CSULB is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e. H-1B Visas).

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
