    Job Description

    OVERVIEW

    Kitsap County is seeking a skilled and dedicated Equipment Services Mechanic to fill this critical role that serves as the backbone of our county's operational readiness. This position offers an outstanding opportunity to advance your career in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance while making a lasting impact on the essential services that keep our community moving forward. You'll be stepping into a well-equipped fleet maintenance operation that supports everything from emergency response vehicles to road maintenance equipment, ready for an experienced mechanic who takes pride in keeping critical infrastructure operational.

    This role offers the perfect blend of challenging diagnostic work, hands-on repair, and fabrication projects for an experienced professional ready to take the next step in their career. As a vital member of our fleet services team, you'll ensure that county vehicles and equipment are maintained to the highest standards, directly supporting public works, emergency services, and community programs that residents depend on every day.

    As a Mechanic, you will:
    • Lead preventative maintenance operations across the County's diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime for critical county services
    • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty equipment including loaders, graders, dozers, compactors, and medium to heavy-duty trucks to OEM specifications
    • Manage engine, transmission, and emission system repairs on both gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to ensure compliance and performance
    • Execute vehicle upfitting projects by installing Mobile Computer Terminals (MCTs), emergency lighting systems, and specialized tooling on new county vehicles
    • Direct fabrication work including plasma cutting, oxygen/acetylene cutting and welding, arc welding, and MIG welding to modify, repair, and create custom equipment and parts
    • Oversee inspection and repair of air, electric, and hydraulic control systems and circuits found on county-owned vehicles and equipment
    • Ensure shop readiness by maintaining tools and the shop area in clean, orderly, and safe condition while adhering to all safety protocols
    • Respond to emergency situations as part of on-call rotation, providing critical support 24/7 as needed to keep essential county services operational in all weather conditions

    What you bring:
    Professional Credentials/Licensing:
    • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record that meets Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy standards
    • Must obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Endorsement N or X and air brake restriction removed (current CDL preferred, or must obtain within 12 months of employment)

    Professional Experience:
    • Associate’s degree in automotive/diesel technology or related field AND two years of recent experience as a heavy-duty diesel and/or gasoline mechanic; OR
      Four years of recent experience as a heavy-duty diesel and/or gasoline mechanic
    • Note: Relevant work experience demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for educational requirements; however, work experience is essential and cannot be replaced by additional education.

    Technical/Industry Background:
    • Proven experience in mechanical diagnostics and repair on a wide range of vehicles, including light duty and heavy-duty trucks, as well as specialized equipment like graders, loaders, and tractors.
    • Experience with hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems commonly found on County-owned vehicles and equipment.
    • Expertise in welding, fabrication, and use of heavy machinery and power tools.
    • Ability to perform preventative maintenance to OEM specifications for all types of equipment.

    Additional Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certificate or equivalent
    • Experience in electrical/electronics, hydraulics, and hydraulic systems with air or low voltage control circuits
    • Metal fabrication, welding, and/or machine shop experience
    • Forklift Certification (must obtain within 12 months if not currently certified)

    Pre-Employment Requirements:
    • Authorization and completion of criminal background and driving record check (reviewed case-by-case)
    • Passing of all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • If already a CDL holder, ability to pass a DOT-regulated drug screen, authorize a pre-employment query in the FMCSA Clearinghouse, and enter into the County’s random testing pool

    Retirement:
    Employees are covered under the PERS retirement plan provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems and Social Security.

    Deferred Compensation (IRS Plan 457b): tax-deferred savings program

    Holidays
    11 paid holidays and 2 additional floating holiday per year. Employees who complete 10 years of service will receive a third floating holiday, effective January 1 of the year after their 10th anniversary.

    Vacation Leave
    New employees are credited with 48 hours of annual leave upon hire and will be begin accruing at the rate of 8 hours per month starting on their 7th month of employment. Employees may carry over 360 hours from one calendar year to the next. Annual leave accrual will increase upon tenure, as follows:

    Upon completion of 2 years: 15 days per year (10.00 hours per month)
    Upon completion of 5 years: 20 days per year (13.33 hours per month)
    Upon completion of 10 years: 25 days per year (16.67 hours per month)

    Sick Leave
    All new hires will be credited with 60 hours of sick leave upon hire and will begin accruing at the rate of 10 hours per month starting on their 7th month of employment. Employees may carry over 1200 hours from one calendar year to the next.
