    Job Description

    Overview

    The Kennel Technician is responsible for proper sanitation of feline/canine housing with appropriate cleaning chemicals and PPE required to maintain safe handling and preventing Zoonotic Disease spread. Handle animals with Zoonotic Diseases and multiple levels of behavior; including Rabies Quarantine canines/felines, aggressive canines and fractious felines. This position requires assisting the public with education, adoption, meet and greets, adoption forms, and investigations in the database.

    Responsibilities

    • Knowledge of what proper sanitation protocols are in place for each specific species

    • Appropriate use and knowledge of cleaning chemicals and PPE

    • Maintain safe handling of all species in the shelter to prevent the spread of Zoonotic disease and create a quiet atmosphere for all animals in care of the shelter

    • Knowledge of Shelter Policies and where to locate them

    • Provide care of animals throughout the day; ensuring all animals have water; clean kennels; enrichment

    • Monitor animals for behavioral and medical changes, properly document and alert medical team

    • Practice proper animal handling, housing and care established by Standards of Shelter Medicine and regulated through state and local laws

    • Direct contact with animals carrying Zoonotic Diseases; utilizing proper PPE

    • Daily interaction with customers who are reclaiming animals, adopting, rescuing or obtaining information

    • Must have excellent customer service

    • Interaction with families with small children

    • Able to handle complaints or irate customers in person or via phone and resolve issues effectively

    • Assist customers with meet and greets, background check in database, adoption

    • Knowledge of local City Ordinances and where to locate them; Adoption Processes and Standard of Care for Animals

    • Knowledge of local city ordinances, where to locate them

    • Excellent note taking required

    • Proper intake of animals, utilizing proper intake dates and due out dates per city ordinance

    • Knowledge of the multiple different Zoonotic diseases; how they are transmitted and how to prevent the spread of disease

    • Vaccinate upon intake and microchip animals before leaving the shelter

    • Knowledge of proper sanitation protocols utilizing proper dilutions of chemicals

    • Proper sanitation of all animal housing areas; including counters, walls, scales, floors

    • Remove feces from dog runs; trash pickup; organization of cleaning supplies and equipment

    • Remove pet waste; sanitize each animal housing; inspect guillotine door system, gates, fencing, locking mechanisms, cables for safety

    • Proper use of Incinerator

    • Provide socialization and enrichment based on behavioral assessments

    • Utilize Dog's Play for Life training to properly organize and regulate multiple level play groups

    • Provide accurate assessment for temperament testing of canine interactions

    • Assess and document canine behavior/temperament during human interactions

    • Provide daily behavioral and social enrichment to maintain the animals' health and/or modify behavior caused by environmental stress

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

    • Non-Exempt - Full-Time

    • Rotating 40-hour work week, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm or 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

    • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma / GED

    • No prior experience required

    Licenses and Certifications

    Required

    • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

    • Microchip Certification (in-house training)

    • Vaccination Certification (in house training)

    • Defensive Driving Certification (City training)

    Required within one (1) year of hire

    Euthanasia Certification (DSHS)

    Employment Testing

    Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

    • Criminal Background Check: Yes

    • Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes

    • Drug Screening: Yes

    • Physical Exam: Yes

    Basis of Rating

    A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
